Rosa Galica

The roses grown at Jurlique’s Mylor farm were originally established as one of the first productive crops, and today we still harvest from those original bushes. Roses are a perennial shrub, which are traditionally planted into the ground during winter. Rose flowers are hand-harvested from the middle of Spring through to Autumn (October through to April in Adelaide) depending on production requirements, and Jurlique harvests from almost 2000 rose bushes to use in our skin care formulations.

Roses are flowers that give off the feeling of warmth, generosity, and love; they have a special scent that gives wonderful aromatherapy effects. Within the petals is found rose oil and rose water, which are a foundation for many of Jurlique’s most popular products.

The benefits of rose water and oils are that they soothe dry and sensitive skin, and make aging skin look younger.

Calendula is harvested from late spring all through summer with a year’s harvest yielding approx 750kg, making it the highest yielding crop for Mylor farm. Calendula officinalis herb is essential for producing a number of Jurlique skin care formulations, including our "Jurlique Calendula Cream”, which when applied to the skin assists in the restoration and conditioning of delicate skin, and is ideal as an after-sun moisturizer.

Calendula officinalis plants are a very hardy, annually grown herb at Mylor farm. The flowers from each year’s crop produce the seeds required for the following year’s crop. The seeds can be easily harvested and propagated on site, applying the same holistic biodynamic principles and practices as for propagating chamomile, along with the majority of the herbs grown at Mylor Farm.

Calendula officinalis plant produces vibrant, orange flowers that look somewhat like a lion’s mane or the bright summer sun. The leaves are a pale green spoon-like shape, with the plant itself standing approximately 30cm tall.

All our herbs and flowers are gently tended and harvested by hand on our NASAA certified biodynamic farm, and once harvested they are transferred to the drying facility where the herbs and flowers are carefully laid out onto specially designed racks which allow for natural drying to occur.

Spilanthes acmella (Toothache Plant)

Spilanthes acmella is native to the tropics of Brazil, and is cultivated under subtropical conditions all year round within the hot house at the Jurlique farm. These conditions allow for optimal growth, as Spilanthes thrive in high humidity and well drained soils. By cultivating them as perennials, we are able grow the plants for longer time periods and increase the strength and vigor of the plant, while simultaneously increasing the amount of nutrients which are able to be extracted.

Prior to this practice, Spilanthes was an annually propagated plant on the Mylor Farm, sowed in spring and harvested in late summer to early autumn. This is because the winter conditions in the Adelaide Hills do not suit the subtropical environment that Spilanthes prefers. Now that our Spilanthes is grown in a semi-controlled environment, it allows for optimal growth and yields from the plant, while still aligning with biodynamic agriculture principles. Spilanthes have rich green foliage, forming flat button buds which evolve into a cone shaped bright yellow petal-less flowers, on elongated stems.

Spilanthes is known as "The Toothache Plant”; the name derives from the numbing effect it produces when the leaves or flowers are chewed, mildly anaesthetizing the tongue and gums. Spilanthes extract is reported to reduce muscle tension when applied topically, and as such it aids to decrease facial lines and wrinkles that are partially caused by tense or contracted facial muscles. It is claimed that Spilanthes also contains anti–bacterial, anti–fungal and anti–parasitic properties. Spilanthes is contained within a majority of Jurlique products, and acts in combination with other active ingredients to form Jurlique’s potent formulas for our purest skin care range.

All our herbs and flowers are gently tended and harvested by hand on our certified biodynamic farm, and once harvested they are transferred to a facility where they are carefully laid out onto specially designed racks to dry naturally which ensures the retention of beneficial active constituents within the herbs and flowers.
