How to Achieve ‘No-Makeup’ Makeup

As the old saying goes, less is more. While we love playing around with makeup, we’re all about an effortless everyday look that highlights your best features and gives skin a healthy looking glow. For an easy, foolproof routine, we’ve teamed up with Jane Iredale – the brand that creates natural makeup with skincare benefits – to come up with our best tips on achieving ‘no-makeup’ makeup.

Step 1: Prep your skin

For that effortless ‘I woke up like this’, no-makeup look, start with skincare products that will hydrate and brighten. After cleansing, use an essence such as the Jurlique Purely White Skin Brightening Essence– packed with powerful botanicals, this lotion is our go-to for reducing the appeareance of skin discolouration. Next, apply a serum - the Herbal Recovery Signature Serum offers radiance and a reduction in appearance of fine lines - followed by a lightweight and effective moisturiser like the Moisture Replenishing Day Cream, the ultimate face cream for flawless looking skin.

Step 2: Use a primer

It’s a product often overlooked, but primers smooth the skin’s surface and ensure your makeup lasts longer. Choose a dewy primer for that fresh, natural look and wait a few minutes for your moisturiser to absorb before applying (for the best results, warm the primer between your fingertips first).

Step 3: Groom your brows

From the early 2000s pencil-thin brow to Cara Delevingne’s era-defining oversized look, we’ve seen our fair share of eyebrow trends over the decades. For a natural, timeless look, keep your brows groomed, see a professional a few times a year (we have ours on speed dial) and avoid overplucking. Shape and fill your brows to follow your natural arch and brush them up and away from your face. When it comes to your eyes, skip the eyeliner and keep it simple by using an eyelash curler, applying a coat of mascara to the top lashes and applying a small amount of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes to brighten them up.

Step 4: Choose a lightweight coverage

Now you’ve got your skincare nailed and you’re all prepped, it’s time to move onto the makeup. Forgo the foundation and choose a BB cream that is lightweight, hydrating and brightening (your skin will thank you for it). Like the rest of the Jane Iredale range, the Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream is made up of high-performance minerals and organic ingredients, meaning it doesn’t just provide coverage but it’s good for your skin too. Use your finger to dab a cream concealer on any blemishes or pesky dark circles – and don’t forget to blend.

Step 5: Warm up your complexion

As an extra boost, a small amount of blush or bronzer will do wonders – our favourite is the Jane Iredale Peaches and Cream Bronzer Refill (plus, Meghan Markle is a fan). For the finishing touches, add a slick of lip balm (the The Jurlique Lip Care Balm is great for healthy-looking lips) and set your makeup with a hydrating mist. Go for cult classic the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist and pop a bottle in your bag to freshen up throughout the day.

In short, ‘no makeup’ makeup is all about enhancing what you already have, using a carefully-selected range of products that will lead to a flawless looking complexion (after all, we all need a little help now and then). Give your skin a glowing head-start by adding hydrating products to your routine. Shop our range of essences, serums and moisturisers for the best skincare products for flawless looking skin.
