Jurique Insiders

Five minutes with… Yoshie Obara

Yoshie is Jurlique’s official Environmental Officer – we like to call her our ‘Eco Crusader’. From winning environmental awards for tree-planting initiatives, to spreading the word on sustainability across the business, she has a passion for the planet that inspires us all.

I’ve always been interested in environmental sustainability, so knew it was an area I’d love to work in. I studied for a Masters in Corporate Sustainability Management at Monash University and joined Jurlique in 2012 initially as an intern while studying.

When the Tsunami disaster hit Japan a few years ago, the country town I grew up in – Iwate – was one of the areas that was devastated. Fortunately for me, my family and friends were unharmed but the disaster made me realise how fragile the earth is and how important it is for us to do what we can to take care of it.

I’m extremely proud knowing that the key purpose of my job at Jurlique is to be a positive influence. Everyday I get to spread the word by helping to educate the people in our business about the importance of caring for the environment. I’m also very proud of the fact that Jurlique has planted over 10,000 trees, which equates to 1,666 tonnes of CO2-e and the equivalent of 347 cars off the road for a thirty year period. A great achievement!

My top eco-tip is to carpool, walk, run or cycle rather than drive. Think outside the car for new ways to get to work. Make it fun, and even social!

My favourite Jurlique product is… the Intense Recovery Mask – I have very dry skin and so this product is perfect for me.

More about our Awards…

Jurlique has been internationally recognised for its environmental and sustainable practices over the years, receiving the following accolades:

  • Business SA GOLD Environmental Accreditation – This Gold award recognises the fact that we have achieved our goal of creating an Environmental Management System for our factory and farm sites.
  • Zero Waste SA Certificate of Recognition – This award recognises Jurlique’s waste management efforts as industry ‘best practice’. It has been determined that we currently divert approximately 85% of our factory and farm waste from landfill by methods of recycling or re-using the waste.
